Kentucky Derby 2020: A Pandemic-Altered Race

The 2020 Kentucky Derby was a significant event, although not as momentous as the previous year. Wagers placed on the race totaled $79.4 million, a considerable sum, but significantly less than the record-breaking $126 million wagered in 2019. The race was conducted in September, rather than its customary May date, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Spectators were prohibited from attending the event. The Derby is typically a massive gathering, drawing large crowds, but this year’s race was a departure from the norm.
