Belgium Reduces Online Sports Betting Licenses

The Belgian government has implemented a new regulation that will decrease the maximum number of online gambling permits.

This new royal order, which was recently approved, will lower the permitted number of online sports wagering licenses from 34 to 31.

The initial decree, enacted on December 22, 2010, established a cap of 34 licenses for online sports betting operators. This regulation was in force from 2010 to 2020.

The new decree, which will be in effect until July 31, 2022, supersedes the previous legislation. It reduces the number of permits that can be issued for online sports betting to 31.

At present, 24 valid permits have been issued by the commission, including Unibet, Bwin, and Betway.

Prior to establishing the new number of permits, the government sought advice from the Gambling Commission, as well as the Budget Department and the Financial Audit Agency.

Last month, the Belgian Gambling Commission also added three new unlicensed online gambling operator websites to its list of prohibited sites. These websites are Cbet.gg and Loot.bet, which specialize in esports, and the casino website VIPStakes.
