The British gaming sector, as voiced by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), aims to ensure the perspective of the typical player is acknowledged. They highlight that a significant majority of those who engage in gambling, approximately 99.7%, do so in a responsible manner without encountering problems.
Although the BGC embraces the government’s initiatives to implement more stringent gambling regulations, they advise against categorizing all gamblers alike. They emphasize that a substantial number of individuals derive enjoyment from gambling safely and responsibly as a form of leisure.
The BGC’s statement comes in reaction to a government report that suggests a series of actions to strengthen gambling rules, encompassing affordability assessments and wagering restrictions. While these steps are designed to safeguard the small fraction of individuals grappling with gambling addiction, the BGC underscores the significance of discovering a balanced strategy that doesn’t unjustly affect the enjoyment of responsible gamblers. They maintain their dedication to collaborating with the government to guarantee an equitable and sustainable gaming industry for all.
In the last three years, Britain has made considerable progress in tackling gambling addiction. Through the enactment of 11 guidelines and more than 80 actions, they have fostered a more secure and accountable gaming landscape.
These endeavors have yielded remarkable outcomes. From 2017 onward, the prevalence of problem gambling has been nearly halved, currently resting at a minimal 0.3%. This positions the UK as a frontrunner in responsible gaming, exhibiting one of the lowest rates globally.
It is noteworthy that the gaming sector plays a pivotal role in the UK’s economic framework. It contributes a substantial £71 billion (equivalent to $93 billion) and sustains over 100,000 employment opportunities.
Despite the industry’s expansion, the UK remains dedicated to harm reduction. As emphasized by Michael Dugher, the head of the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), the incidence of problem gambling is, in reality, declining even as engagement with gambling offerings rises.
